Movement Culture in Chicago: What It Is and Where to Train It

Scroll through fitness videos and you will see it. People crawling on the floor. People hanging from bars. People balancing on one leg. It looks like play. It is actually training. It has a name: movement culture.

What is movement culture?

Movement culture is a way of training from a coach named Ido Portal. He is known around the world for it. The idea is simple. Most workouts train one muscle at a time. Movement culture trains your whole body to move well. Squat. Crawl. Hang. Balance. Jump.

The goal is not just to look strong. The goal is a body that can do more things.

Why do people like it?

It is hard to get bored. Every session is a little different. One day you work on a handstand. One day you work on a deep squat. One day you crawl on the floor.

You learn real skills. A handstand is a skill. A deep squat is a skill. Balancing on one leg is a skill. Skills give you something to practice, not just something to finish.

It builds strength and mobility at the same time. You do not have to pick one.

What is a session like?

Every session starts slow. You warm up your joints. Then you practice skills. Then some simple strength work. Then floor work. Then you cool down. That is it. No machines you sit in. No treadmills.

Is it for beginners?

Yes. You do not need to be strong yet. You do not need to be bendy. You just need to be ready to learn. Every move has small steps. You start at step one.

Ido Portal still teaches this today and posts new movement practice videos. And you can try it right here in River North.

We are the only true Ido Portal Method movement gym in Chicago.
