Strong but Stiff? Try Movement Training in Chicago

Movement training in Chicago can bring strength and mobility into the same session. At Chicago Movement Gym in River North, we train the Ido Portal Method. You work on strength, balance, and flow training. The goal is simple. Get strong. Learn to move, too.

You lift. You work hard. Then you bend down to tie your shoe and make a noise like an old door.

Your workout may need more than another set of curls.

1. Keep the strength. Add more ways to move.

Weights are useful. This is not a fight with your dumbbells.

But a big lift is one skill. A deep squat is another. So is getting down to the floor and back up.

You can train for more than one thing. There is no rule that says you must pick.

2. Mobility is getting a turn.

The American College of Sports Medicine put functional fitness in its top 10 fitness trends for 2026. That means training for things you do in real life. Strength and mobility both belong in that mix.

Fitness videos are talking about this, too. One recent video from Jack H. Woods pairs strength work with mobility, rather than treating them as two separate jobs.

You do not need to copy a stranger's whole routine. But the idea is worth a look. Train to move well, not just to lift more.

3. Your body can learn new skills.

Try a slow squat. Try a simple balance drill. Learn how to move on the floor.

These are skills to practice. You do not have to be good at them on day one.

A chair did not teach you to crawl. Your bench press will not teach you to balance.

That takes practice of its own.

4. Start small. This is not an audition.

You do not need a handstand to walk through our door.

Start with a move you can control. A squat can be shallow. A floor move can be simple. Ask a coach for a version that fits you.

No need to force a deep stretch. Sharp pain is a reason to stop, not a badge to earn.

5. Give your workout a new goal.

More weight can be a goal. So can a smoother squat. Or better balance. Or a floor move that felt strange last week and feels easy now.

You get to learn something. Your workout does not have to feel like the same song on repeat.
